Prometheus® Bronze Clay is a clay-like material that turns into pure, solid bronze after firing in the kiln.
It consists of a mixture of micron-fine bronze powder, water and an organic binder.

The clay can:

  • are formed by hand,

  • rolled out into a sheet or cord,

  • pressed into a mold,

  • be provided with texture,

  • and even turned on a potter’s wheel.

Prometheus® Bronze Clay can be fired together with most synthetic gemstones (such as cubic zirconias), pre-controlled natural stones, glass beads, ceramics and porcelain.

During firing, the organic binder evaporates and burns off, leaving solid bronze.
After firing, you can scratch the surface:

  • brushing,

  • pickle (if necessary, to remove firescale),

  • and polishing to the desired finish.

Applications

With PBC® you can make a wide range of unique creations, such as:

  • sieraden

  • decorative objects

Everything you make with Prometheus® Bronze Clay is a work of art – combine it with your imagination and let your hands do the work!

Baking methods for Prometheus® Bronze Clay (PBC®).

You have three options for baking PBC®.
Prometheus® recommends the carbon method (Carbon Method) for best results.

🥇 1. Carbon Method (Carbon Method).

(recommended by Prometheus®)

This is a two-step method.

Step 1 – Combustion of the binder

  1. Place the dried pieces on a stainless steel rack.

  2. Turn on the oven cold and raise the temperature to 500°C (932°F).

    • Alternative: place the grill on a kitchen stove.

  3. Baking time: 15 minutes.

  4. Remove the pieces from the oven and let them cool on a heat-resistant surface.

Step 2 – Sintering process (bronzing).

  1. Fill the bottom of a steel container with about 3 cm of activated carbon.

  2. Place the pieces in the container with at least 1.5 cm space between each other.

  3. Cover completely with activated carbon and seal the container tightly.

  4. Place in a preheated oven at 820°C (1500°F).

  5. Reheat the oven and bake for 60 minutes.

  6. Leave next:

    • either cool the oven with the pieces in it,

    • or carefully remove the container from the oven and let cool on a heatproof surface to room temperature.

🥈 2. Open Shelf Firing Method.

  1. Place the dried pieces on a stainless steel rack.

  2. Place them in a preheated oven at 820°C (1500°F).

    • 🔸 Preferably place the pieces in the back of the oven (most ovens are cooler by the door).

  3. Wait for the oven to return to temperature and bake for 30 minutes.

  4. After baking:

    • Remove the pieces from the oven and let them cool on a heatproof surface,

    • or extinguish them hot in water (recommended: this removes much of the firescale).

    • ⚠️ Be careful of rising water vapor!

  5. If oxidation is still present, dip the pieces into a hot pickle bath and then rinse well.

🥉 3. Torch Firing Method.

  1. Place the dried piece on a stainless steel grid, on a fiber stone or building stone.

  2. Start heating gently until smoke and a small flame become visible – this means the binder is burning.

  3. Once the flame and smoke disappear, increase the heat to full power.

  4. Heat the piece until it takes on an orange-red glow.

  5. Hold this color for 5-10 minutes – observe carefully and avoid melting.

  6. After baking:

    • let the piece cool,

    • or extinguish it in water.

  7. Then place it in a hot Picklean® bath to remove any remaining firescale.
