What is Mokume Gane?
Mokume Gane literally means “wood grain metal” and is an ancient Japanese technique. In it, several layers of metal are joined together, then patterns are applied to them. The result resembles wood grains or marble-like structures in metal – very special and decorative.
How does it work with metal?
Traditionally, Mokume Gane is made by fusing layers of precious metals (e.g., silver, copper and gold) firmly together and then deforming and machining them. By sawing, filing or pressing into the layered block, the different layers emerge and the typical pattern is created.
